Berkshire Hathaway’s June 27, 2025 statement described Warren Buffett’s donation of 12,358,321 Class B shares to five foundations. The document identifies a particular gift and its recipients; it is not an announcement of a final $30 billion donation. Berkshire statement
The statement explains that Buffett converted Class A shares into Class B shares before making the contributions. That distinction matters when reporting the quantity donated. A share count should identify the share class rather than treating every Berkshire share as interchangeable.
The recipients included the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust and four other foundations named in the statement. Berkshire placed the gift within annual giving arrangements established in June 2006. The source therefore provides a dated account of part of an ongoing philanthropic programme, rather than a declaration that all future giving had ended.
A number of shares and a dollar valuation are also different measures. Market prices and the valuation date affect any conversion from shares to currency. Claims about a lifetime total, a final gift or the precise value of future donations need their own dated basis rather than being inferred from this one announcement.
Archive note: the earlier final $30 billion gift and attributed remarks were not substantiated.
