KEYNOTE-942 is a Phase 2b study evaluating individualized mRNA-4157/V940 in combination with pembrolizumab in people with resected melanoma. The study registration identifies the intervention and study setting. This is not evidence of a universally effective cancer vaccine or a treatment suitable for every patient. Study registration
The combination matters: the study concerns the investigational vaccine alongside pembrolizumab, rather than an assessment of the vaccine as a stand-alone treatment. The resected-melanoma setting also limits the population to which a description of the research applies. Results from that setting cannot automatically be transferred to other cancers or stages of disease.
On July 26, 2023, Merck and Moderna announced the initiation of the Phase 3 V940-001 study in people with resected high-risk Stage IIB–IV melanoma. The sponsor announcement described a comparison of V940 plus pembrolizumab against pembrolizumab alone, with recurrence-free survival as the primary endpoint. The Phase 2b and Phase 3 studies are distinct research programmes. A trial's initiation is not a completed-trial result or regulatory authorization. Phase 3 sponsor announcement
Readers seeking an efficacy estimate should consult the published trial report and its endpoints, comparison group and follow-up period. Registration and sponsor announcements support reporting on what is being studied, but do not prove the earlier claim of 90% efficacy. This is research coverage, not treatment advice.
Archive note: the earlier efficacy, participant-count and regulatory claims were not substantiated.
