B Lab's certified-company community is distinct from a stock-market index

B Lab's certification guide describes assessment against its standards and third-party verification, not the creation of a stock-market index.

B Corp certification assesses a company’s social, environmental and governance impact against B Lab’s standards. B Lab describes a process involving independent auditing and verification by a third party. Certification is not the same thing as inclusion in a stock-market index or a claim about investment returns. B Lab certification guide

The certification page describes requirements for companies seeking to join the Certified B Corporation community. It addresses how businesses meet the applicable standards and participate in an assessment process. The certification concerns a business’s practices and impacts, rather than the price or performance of its shares.

B Lab says a new version of its standards launched in April 2025 for companies certifying from 2026. The date and version matter because certification requirements can change. A description of an earlier process should not be treated automatically as the current requirements for every applicant.

A stock-market index is a different instrument with its own provider, methodology and constituent rules. Establishing that B Lab certifies companies does not establish that an exchange launched a B-Corporation index. An index announcement would need a source from the responsible provider and a published methodology.

Archive note: the earlier FTSE or London Stock Exchange index, constituent and investment-performance claims were not substantiated.
