The UK AI Council held its final meeting on 21 June 2023, according to its GOV.UK page. The government describes the council in the past tense as an independent expert committee that advised government and provided high-level leadership for the artificial-intelligence ecosystem. It should therefore not be presented as an active council making new appointments. Government record

The council was non-statutory: its role was advisory rather than that of a regulator exercising statutory enforcement powers. Its published objectives included facilitating dialogue among industry, academia and government, sharing research expertise, and helping policymakers consider opportunities and challenges in AI.

The government page also describes priorities involving skills, public understanding and the adoption of AI in businesses and society. Following the final meeting, it said members would be invited to act as individual expert advisers to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. That is different from continuing the council as a standing body.

The distinction matters when evaluating claims about membership or institutional authority. A historical committee page establishes the committee’s purpose and recorded timeline; it does not substantiate a new advisory appointment or a meeting schedule announced by an unrelated publisher.

Archive note: the earlier appointment and membership claims were not substantiated.
